Image Backup: |
| |
Q: How do I create an image backup?
A. The easiest way to create an image backup is from within the EzBackup software application installed on your computer. Simply select IMAGE BACKUP from the TOOLS menu and EzBackup will guide you through the process. Alternatively, you can create an image backup using the EzBackup Installation and Recovery CD. To do this, insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive and reboot your computer from the CD. If this is successful, you will see a large EzBackup logo displayed while the image backup and restore application loads .(If you do not see this splash screen, or if you see the Windows logo or your usual operating system boot up messages displayed instead, you DID NOT successfully boot from the CD. See the following question for tips on what to do.) Choose Backup and follow the onscreen instructions to create an image backup of your source drive. Upon completion of the image backup, you will be asked to remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive. Take it out and keep it in a safe place, then click OK. Your computer will then shut down. Now you can start it up again normally and continue your work. |
| |
Q: How do I know if my computer has boot
up from the EzBackup Installation and Recovery CD?
A. If your computer has booted up from
the CD, you will see the EzBackup splash
screen. Once EzBackup has loaded completely, the main screen will appear and you will be able to select the BACKUP or RESTORE tab to continue.
A. Many computers are configured to boot up from the CD drive automatically, if a bootable CD is present when the system is started up. Others may need to be reconfigured to do so. Each computer model is different, so please check with your computer manufacturer for support and specific instructions on how to do this. If your computer does not boot up from the installation CD automatically, try restarting your computer again and this time read all the messages that appear on the screen as it starts up. You may see a message that tells you a button to press to boot from CD, or you may see a message that tells you a button (or button sequence) to press to access the boot menu. If you are able to access the boot menu, use it to change the boot device to the CD-ROM drive.; |
| |
Q:
How do I configure my computer's BIOS
settings to allow it to boot up from the
EzBackup Installation and Recovery
CD?
A. Most systems have different ways to
access the BIOS settings; therefore,
please consult the documentation for
your computer or the computer
manufacturer's technical support to
learn how to configure your computer's
BIOS settings to allow for a boot from
the CD-ROM drive. The EzBackup full user manual, included in PDF format on the CD and available from the Support/Manuals area of this website, provides suggested keystroke combinations for accessing the BIOS of a variety of different computer models. |
| |
Q: Do I need to perform regular image
backups? If so, why?
A: Version 3.0 regularly backs up system files so it is not essential to re-image your drive on a regular basis. However, it is always a good idea to re-image whenever you make major changes to your system, such as adding new hardware or software. Also, remember that, when you image your drive, all previous incremental file backups are overwritten. If you are using the INCREMENTAL BACKUP method, which maintains multiple dated copies of your file backups, you may wish to periodically re-image the drive to eliminate older or unnecessary backup files and clear space for new backups.
Image backups cannot be scheduled and must be run manually. Please follow the instructions on How to Create an Image Backup to properly perform an image of your internal hard drive |
|
| Q: Can I use the EzBackup-sa to backup my RAID-0 or RAID-1 array? |
| A: The EzBackup software does not support backup of a RAID-0 array. RAID-1 is only supported for a drive in one of our own DupliDisk or EzRAID disk mirroring arrays. |
|
| Q: What should I do if my screen goes blank or I recieve errors when trying to boot from the cd? |
A: Version 3.0 of the EzBackup software has eliminated the problems some users had when attempting to boot from the CD to perform image and restore tasks.
The following suggestions apply only if you are using EzBackup Version 1.x or 2.x.: If the CD does not boot all the way up to the image backup application (the program with the "Backup" and "Restore" tabs on the upper-middle area), freezes near the end of boot time, or simply boots up and shuts down immediately after boot, you will need to run console mode.
To do this you must power up your computer and boot from the EzBackup CD.As soon as the disk begins loading you will see a black screen with the word "EzBackup" on the top left corner and a blinking cursor below it. Within 5 seconds of seeing it, you must type "con" and press enter. The system will boot up normally, but rather than a graphical application, you will get a black screen with a text based application. Follow the instructions on the screen (type the number that corresponds to the option you want and press enter). |
| |
Q: I am running Windows 2000/Windows 2000 Server. After doing an image backup, EzBackup tells me there is an "error creating incremental backup volume." What does this mean?
A. Windows 2000 lacks a utility called Diskpart that EzBackup uses to set up incremental backup. Microsoft provides a download of this utility as part of its "Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit" and "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kit."
Go to http://download.microsoft.com/download/win2000platform/DiskPart/1.00.0.1/nt5/en-us/DiskPart_setup.exe to download the setup file that will install the Diskpart utility to your computer. (This is a very small download. It just contains a few files that are copied to the computer.) Then go to the location where it the files have been copied (usually the C:\Program Files\ResourceKit\ directory) and copy the DiskPart.exe file from there into the directory where EzBackup was installed to (usually C:\Program Files\DPS\EzBackup\). EzBackup will then be able to use the utility and the error will no longer occur. |

File Backup:
|
| |
Q: Can I copy files to the EzBackup®sa
through Windows® Explorer?
A. Yes, you can copy files to and from
the EzBackup®sa drive through Windows®
Explorer, just as you would with any
external USB drive. However, we
recommend that you copy files to the
EzBackup®sa drive using the EzBackup®sa
application and that you use the
EzBackup®sa drive for backing up your
primary hard drive only, since any files
copied to the EzBackup®sa drive will be
overwritten when the next image backup
is performed. |
| |
Q: Can I read and write to my EzBackup®sa
drive just like any other removable USB
Storage Device?
A. Yes, your EzBackup®sa is a standard
USB external hard drive. In fact,
through any appropriate Windows®
application, you can read and write the
files on this drive. However we
recommend that you only write data to
the EzBackup®sa drive using the
EzBackup®sa application software, since
all data on the EzBackup®sa drive will
be overwritten when the next image
backup is performed. |
| |
Q:
Why does a new/modified files backup
seem to take so long?
A. During a new/modified files backup,
the EzBackup®sa application searches
your entire drive for files that are new
or that have changed since your last
backup (file backup or image backup).
This could take some time depending on
the capacity of your computer's internal
drive. |
| |
Q:
Why does a new/modified files backup
still take so long even when I have just
done an image backup?
A: Even after a successful image
backup, the EzBackup®sa application
still has to search through all the
files on your computer's hard drive when
you select to perform a new/modified
files backup. This is because there are
files that are updated by the operating
system, and other background programs,
as the computer boots up and while the
operating system runs. Even if you have
not changed any files manually yourself,
there can be changes to these hidden and
system files that EzBackup®sa must
detect. |
| |
Q:
Can I back up all my files using the
EzBackup®sa, even files that are in use
(open)?
A: A file backup using the EzBackup®sa application can back up any files on
your computer except for certain files
that are restricted by the computer's
operating system and for files that only
exist partially or entirely in your
computer's memory (open files). In order
to back up all files needed for the
smooth and stable running of your
computer system, we recommend that you
perform image backups at regular
intervals (once or twice a month). Only
performing an image backup can guarantee
that all your files have been
successfully backed up. |

Schedule Backup: |
|
|
Q: How do I schedule a backup?
A. Open the EzBackup
application and click on the Schedule
tab. Select Create New Schedule
and click on Next. Select the
option that best fits your needs and
click on Next again. Select
Yes if you want to save the changes
or No if you want to make more
changes. |
|
|
Q: How do I create and save a job list?
A. Open the EzBackup application
and click on the Schedule tab. Select
Create New Schedule and click on
Next.
Select Selected Files, the frequency of
the backup and click on Next. Select the
specific files that you wish to backup,
add them to the list and click on the
Save button located on the top right
corner. Name and save the list. |
|
|
Q:
Why didn't my scheduled backup run?
A. Scheduled backups will not run if
the computer is off. Please make sure
that your computer and the EzBackup®sa
drive will be on at the time you have
set for running a scheduled backup. Also
make sure that the EzBackup®sa drive was
connected and switched on at the time
the backup was supposed to run. Please
check the log (View menu -> View Log
File) to see if there are any error
messages from your missed backup. You
can always start a backup manually. |

Ez-Touchsm
(Upon Detection): |
|
|
Q:
How does the Ez-Touchsm (Upon
Detection) feature work?
A: Ez-Touchsm,
or Upon Detection, has two options:
Button Pressed and Drive Connected. The
Ez-Touchsm feature will cause the drive to
automatically backup New/Modified files
when the blue button on the front of the
EzBackup®sa drive is pressed or when the
drive is connected to the computer's USB
port. Ez-Touchsm can
be enabled by going to the Schedule tab
and creating a new schedule. Select Upon
Detection as the backup type, and select
Drive Connected and/or Button Pressed as
the Ez-Touchsm
option and then click Next to finish
setting up the schedule. For your
convenience, the EzTouch: Button Pressed
feature is enabled as a default setting. |
| |
|
Restore: |
|
|
Q: My computer's hard drive has crashed/
is corrupted. How do I restore my
backups from the EzBackup®sa?
A: To perform a total system recovery,
insert the EzBackup®sa Installation and Recovery CD into your CD-ROM drive and restart your
computer. The computer should boot up
from the CD and the EzBackup install
splash screen will be displayed. Choose
Restore from the screen. Restoring will
overwrite all data on your computer's
hard drive and it will copy back all the
data that you have saved to the
EzBackup®sa drive. When the restore is
complete, remove the CD from the CD-ROM
drive and restart your computer. |

root?
A: No, you must log in as root to
install the application. |
| |
|
Hardware
Information: |
|
|
Q: What is the fan switch for? Do I need
to have it on?
A. The EzBackup®sa external backup
unit has a fan that keeps the unit cool
at all times. Therefore, the fan must be
on when the unit is on. This will keep
the unit from overheating which could
cause the unit to malfunction. |
|
|
Q: How much data can my EzBackup®sa
hold?
A. The quantity of data that your
EzBackup®sa can hold will depend on the
capacity of the drive in the EzBackup®sa
that you have purchased (If you are not
sure about the capacity of the EzBackup®sa
drive, you can get that information from
the application by selecting Hardware
Properties under the View menu). It is
highly recommended that you select an EzBackup®sa drive with a capacity that
is at least 10% greater than the
capacity of your internal drive. This
will ensure that all data on your
computer's hard drive can be replicated
over to the EzBackup®sa drive and that
no data will be lost due to minute and
usually insignificant differences in the
actual capacity of the drives. |
|
|
Q:
Can I reformat the EzBackup®sa drive?
A. No, you should not reformat the
drive in any circumstances since this
can delete critical information required
for operation with the EzBackup®sa
software. If you only use the EzBackup®sa
drive to backup your primary hard drive,
as instructed in the user manual, then
the only way you should clear all the
data on the drive is by performing a new
image backup to the EzBackup®sa drive. |
